Sony disclosed a major impairment tied to Bungie alongside confirmation of a third round of layoffs at the studio. Washington State WARN-related filings reported 292 full-time Bungie employees scheduled for separation on July 9, 2026, representing the confirmed figure for the 2026 round; that cut followed prior rounds of roughly 100 positions in November 2023 and 220 in July 2024. The layoffs affected most of Bungie’s Destiny team and some Marathon staff, with remaining employees reportedly redirected toward live support for Marathon. The write-down (¥120.1 billion, roughly $765 million) was attributed to Destiny 2’s declining engagement and Marathon’s troubled launch, prompting strategic pullback and the studio’s shift away from active live-service development for Destiny 2.
