Crescent Duck Farm in Aquebogue was forced to lay off 48 workers during a shutdown prompted by a bird flu outbreak that led to culling nearly its entire flock. The owner, Doug Corwin, kept 20 workers to help with cleanup and later has rehired most of his full-time staff (about 37) plus two new hires as the farm restarted operations after 19 months. The outbreak eliminated roughly 99,000 birds; the farm used 15,000 stored eggs to regenerate stock and has resumed production at about 70% of pre-outbreak levels, with about 2,100 adult breeding ducks and roughly 9,000 ducklings reported. Precautions and renovations were implemented across the 140-acre property and about 25 barns to prevent future outbreaks.
