Georgia-Pacific announced it will permanently close its containerboard mill in Cedar Springs, Georgia, and eliminate all 535 positions there, with most job eliminations slated by Aug. 1. The company said production and runtime will continue while it fulfills customer commitments and plans an orderly shutdown, and it will shift some Cedar Springs production to other Georgia-Pacific mills. Georgia-Pacific filed a worker adjustment notification with the state indicating some layoffs may occur before or after Aug. 1 depending on business needs; salaried employees will receive severance and hourly employees are subject to effects bargaining with unions. The company cited an inability of the Cedar Springs mill to competitively serve customers long term and noted assistance for employees in finding other roles within Georgia-Pacific, Koch-owned businesses, or externally. The closure follows recent other plant closures the company announced, including a plywood plant in Emporia, Virginia, affecting 550 employees.
