Layoff timeline
1 EVENTJersey City’s administration announced the layoff of 31 provisional employees amid a budget dispute with the City Council over proposed tax increases. City officials say the cuts were taken after council members rejected the mayor’s proposed tax hikes, which the administration had argued were needed to avoid job losses; the administration had earlier proposed a 20% tax increase and later a 15% increase which the council voted down. City spokesman Nathaniel Styer and a city advisor notified union leaders and council members that the 31 provisional employees are being laid off, saying layoffs were a last resort after more than $55 million in expense cuts. Councilmembers criticized the administration for how the layoffs were communicated to unions and for moving toward layoffs before the council saw the proposed budget and loan terms. The administration stated affected employees are being notified directly and that the move is aimed at achieving additional spending reductions.
