O'Brien's Market, a family-run grocery chain founded in 1977 with three Central Valley locations, is closing its last two Modesto stores on Sept. 26 and Sept. 27 following a prior Riverbank sale in 2024. The company employs 117 people who will be affected by the closures; the Roseburg Square store notice says a buyer may hire existing employees if a sale completes before closure, while it's unclear for the Dale Road location. The family cited lasting financial strain from COVID-19 and the challenging business climate as reasons for the shutdown and the owners' retirement. The chain is offering customers 25% off groceries until the stores close and has communicated the planned store closing dates publicly.
