Amazon to lay off 1,110 workers in Florida as two fulfillment centers close for multi-year renovations

Amazon is temporarily shutting down two Florida warehouses — the TMB8 Homestead facility and the PBI3 Port St. Lucie facility — and plans to lay off more than 1,100 workers as it spends $400 million to retrofit both sites. The Homestead closure will result in 616 workers being laid off in two phases (first round already occurred July 2; second set begins Sept. 30), while the Port St. Lucie closure is expected to cut 494 jobs with reductions starting Sept. 17 and again on Dec. 17. WARN notices filed in April and July indicate the separations are expected to be permanent despite tentative reopenings in 2028; employees accepting internal transfers prior to separation dates will not be laid off, and about 300 Homestead staff have already transferred. The affected roles are primarily fulfillment center associates; upon completion of renovations the sites are projected to each employ roughly 1,000 people. Amazon is also expanding other Florida and Texas warehouse projects as part of broader network adjustments.
