Apple Cuts Engineering Program Managers and Vision Pro Staff in Hardware Restructuring

Apple Inc. has begun cutting engineering program managers (EPMs) in its hardware engineering division under new CEO John Ternus, including dismissals reaching director level and others being given weeks to find internal roles or face later layoffs. In late August Apple cut more than 200 positions across Vision Pro, Siri, and software engineering, and California WARN filings confirm a 147-position notice covering Apple Park in Cupertino and two Sunnyvale sites with separations scheduled to take effect on October 19, 2026. The restructuring reflects a shift from Tim Cook's coordination-heavy model toward a leaner, engineering-first structure that Ternus believes will accelerate product cadence; Apple also considered (but paused) replacing ~5,000 AppleCare roles with AI agents. Bloomberg reporting says additional, smaller targeted reductions and further EPM cuts are possible before year-end or in early 2027.
