El Paso ISD Implements Budget-Driven Staff Cuts Ahead of School Year

El Paso Independent School District trustees approved a final round of budget-driven layoffs affecting positions across more than a dozen campuses after declaring financial exigency and identifying large multiyear budget shortfalls. The terminations include probationary teachers in subjects such as English, math, science, social studies and physical education and touch multiple high schools, middle schools, PK-8 campuses and specialized programs. The district cited a roughly $4.3 million shortfall in the 2026-27 adopted general fund (and an earlier external review noting a $52.8 million multiyear gap) as the reason for vacancy eliminations, operational trims and targeted layoffs intended to protect classroom instruction. Affected staff were told they could appeal proposed terminations and the board said it expects this to be the last round of cuts before the school year begins, while staffing will continue to be reviewed as placements and appeals proceed.
