Summary
Unifor and General Motors Company reached preliminary agreements covering more than 4,600 unionized workers in Ontario. Around 30% of that unionized workforce — approximately 1,380 employees — lost their jobs when negotiations began on August 10, 2026, with Oshawa (producing Chevrolet Silverado trucks) accounting for roughly 60% of the workers in scope. Earlier in the year GM also reduced Oshawa operations from three shifts to two, costing about 500 positions, and production at Ingersoll is halted due to weak demand for BrightDrop vans.
