Spirit Airlines abruptly ends operations, cutting ~17,000 workers

Spirit Airlines abruptly ceased operations effective May 2, 2026, and informed employees via email the same day that it was winding down the business. The complaint filed May 12 in the Southern District of New York alleges the carrier reduced its workforce by roughly 17,000 employees without advance notice, leaving workers without jobs, benefits, access to systems, and owing accrued vacation and sick pay. Plaintiffs seek damages under the WARN Act equal to 60 days of wages and benefits and ask the court to certify a class covering all affected Spirit workers. Spirit said it began an orderly wind-down citing sharply higher oil prices and failed federal rescue negotiations; the airline declined to comment on the complaint.
