Stellantis to Reopen Third Shift at Windsor Assembly After Recent Layoffs

Stellantis' Windsor Assembly plant recently announced the return of a third production shift, which the union says will bring back workers and require roughly 1,000–1,200 total hires to staff the shift. The union president said approximately 100 to 150 people are currently laid off due to decreased productivity and that about 100 of those laid-off workers will be called back when the third shift resumes; he also said another 100 to 150 current extras will fill remaining slots. The company had ended the third shift in July 2020 and delayed restoring it amid tariff concerns and softer EV demand, but union and company confirmation led to celebrations on the shop floor. The return is tied to improved demand for gas-powered Dodge Charger models and reduced tariff impact; the majority of jobs reinstated are expected to be new hires, improving stability and seniority prospects for current floaters and recently rehired workers.
