Uber Technologies, Inc. Reportedly Plans to Lay Off 3,400 Employees

Ride-hailing giant Uber has announced a planned global workforce reduction of around 3,300 employees—about 10% of its workforce—as part of a major restructuring to reduce management layers, simplify the organisation and redirect resources toward growth areas like autonomous vehicles and delivery. The cuts are described as the company's biggest round of layoffs since the COVID-19 pandemic and accompany a policy change sharply reducing fully remote roles so only about 1% of employees remain designated as fully remote. Uber says the move is driven by organisational complexity and excess management layers rather than immediate business distress; the company recently reported rising booking volumes and an operating profit. The restructuring will reduce managers, dismantle smaller teams and consolidate operations across fewer locations while keeping a hybrid work model (three days in office) in place.
