Spark Therapeutics, a gene therapy company based in Philadelphia’s University City and owned by Roche Group, announced it is laying off 337 employees—more than half its workforce—as part of a Roche-led restructuring. The company said another 310 Spark employees will be integrated into Roche and remain in Philadelphia. Roche announced the restructuring Jan. 30 after a near-complete write-down of the $4.8 billion acquisition of Spark and cessation of development on a key hemophilia A candidate. Spark told Pennsylvania regulators that layoffs will begin in May with additional rounds in July and December; Roche expects restructuring costs at Spark to top $300 million this year. Spark said it will remain based in Philadelphia and that plans for its Gene Therapy Innovation Center are unchanged.
