Rivian cuts ~150 commercial-team roles ahead of R2 SUV launch

Rivian laid off around 150 workers in its second small staff cut in a matter of months as it prepares for the launch of its more-affordable R2 SUV next year. The company confirmed the reductions primarily affected its commercial team, which handles sales and service operations, and said affected employees are eligible for rehire and encouraged to apply for other roles. These cuts follow an earlier ~1% reduction of the manufacturing team reported in late June and larger reductions earlier in 2024 (including around 10% in early 2024 and another small cut in April). Rivian began the year with approximately 15,000 employees worldwide and has repeatedly adjusted headcount over the past two years amid product and operational shifts.
