The Mosaic Company Reportedly Plans to Lay Off 199 Employees

Mosaic filed an Oct. 5 notice with the Florida Department of Commerce saying it will idle operations at its South Fort Meade phosphate fertilizer plant for more than six months and is preparing to lay off nearly 200 employees, with layoffs expected to begin in December. The company attributed the pause and planned workforce reductions to a global shortage of sulfur, a key input for phosphate fertilizer, and supply disruptions tied to the war in Iran. Mosaic said it remains committed to employees and the community and will evaluate opportunities to resume full operations when market conditions allow. The announcement came amid broader industry strain affecting Florida farmers and calls from local officials for federal action to protect fertilizer production and food security.

The Mosaic Company disclosed this layoff in an official WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) notice recorded by the FL state workforce agency on October 14, 2026. The notice covers 199 employees in FL, with the layoff effective December 8, 2026.

That is roughly 1.4% of the 14,049 people The Mosaic Company employs.
